The story so far

The Peas are Steven Chambers and Martin Hall, childhood friends and song writing partners. The boys met 12 years ago at Kelvin Hall School, a comprehensive in Hull. There wasn’t a lot to do and both turned to music in their early teens. For over ten years, writing music together has been a way of life for both of them... What started as two teenagers bunking off to the bottom of the garden with guitars has evolved into The Peas. The music has followed their lives, and the boys offer an honest insight into a friendship that has taken twists and turns, faded now and then but always returned in the end. Their music tells the story of kids that have grow into men, and has tried to record their experiences of love and life along the way. As The Peas’ lead guitarist and singer songwriter, Martin’s musical journey into the writing duo began oddly enough with a drum kit. ‘I always wanted to be a musician and didn’t care how really. My dad was always the enabler for my music. He bought me a drum kit for Christmas one time and I played and played it out in our garage until my hands were numb with cold. But eventually we moved and we had nowhere for the kit and so I swapped it for a guitar amp; my dad then gave me this old battered guitar that my mum had bought from some guy who hand built it years before. Things just went from there really; a couple of guitars and plenty of Blues and Folk music.” Steve describes what he thinks they’re all about, ‘All we want to do is play music together and say things that we think are important – because nobody else seems to. Sometimes it’s about something political, sometimes it’s about dating somebody and falling in love… sometimes it’s just about remembering to smile. It is simple stuff but it is what we do… and probably always will…’ |
